[status + update] RIP & Yay!

First, my computer died.

I come back from my Asia trip and try to boot it up only to find it just sits there like a brick. Did a little tinkering and thought it might of been a faulty power supply. Brought it over to my friends shop to find out that the entire computer has virtually rusted over since my room had an open window combined with a high humidity thanks to San Francisco's famous fog. Was able to salvage some parts (main PSU, 4GB 1333mz x3, ATI v4800's, all hard drives, sound card) but the rest is now rusted junk sitting in my garage. Anyway, I've decided to build a new one ASAP but still working out the parts I should use... Currently looking into a setup ;
  • Rampage 3 extreme (or a SuperMicro board)
  • i7 960
  • EVGA GTX 580's 1536MB SLI
  • HAF X case
  • SSD for boot (not sure which since I don't want to raid 0 raptors)
  • Replace all HD's that are not 2nd gen Blk Caviars with Blk Caviars
I guess I my computer dying was the perfect excuse to rebuild eh?

Anyway, Tokubetsu is nearly done and about to go through its final QC so keep your pants on (or off) and sit on it (or don't).

  2. personally i would look into an amd build, there should be a motherboard that bulldozer will fit in, allong with a phenom II. it would give more of an upgrade path than an intel build, and most likely be cheaper while providing you with next to no noticeable loss in quality or speed.

for the ssd, i could suggest

    or

they are both good, but i wouldn't use them for storage without some kind of backup, but thats pretty much the same for any storage device.

the good thing about these is they are relatively cheap for the size of the drives, and performance is pretty damn good too.

as for the videocard, i would have to recommend holding off on that until battlefirld 3 comes out, or at least around the launch window. the next gen amd cards should be out by than followed by the nvidia. battlefield 3 will most likely be the testing ground for true next gen games and will show whats important in the cards, because of how they completely got rid of legacy code (what they said). im anticipating at the very least from amd and nvidia to revamp tessellation engines, probably taking it from a 30% performance hit to a 20% or less.

  4. Why is it that even though your computer costs like a trillion dollars more than mine, it still manages to fuck up way more? - Darko

Actually, the Sandy Bridge platform would have more upgrade paths than the current Bulldozer platform.

Bulldozer will utilize the AM3+ socket, but the next generation of Bulldozer will use a different socket.

With Sandy Bridge LGA1155, you can upgrade to Ivy Bridge CPU's.

If anything SB is probably more fitting for a "long term" build as Bulldozer will only have a shelf life of 6 months before it is replaced.
