Some of you guys who are probably even just slightly aware of how things work behind the scenes might have noticed that there's a sort of way we translators label our works. Despite this apparent "rule of thumb", there actually are NO hard-fast rules or standards in how a group can go about naming a certain work. You may have personally cursed a group for labeling images in a certain way that made your computer jumble them up in a senseless disarray, or cry at the fact that the 5 minutes you spent downloading a tank turned out to be an untranslated version, or worse, a non-English version.
So along comes Nash of LWB proposing a standard for group releases. By standard, we're not talking about a stiff rubric that will be policed to the death. It's simply a highly recommended means of being orderly - kinda like being obsessively compulsive while strutting a catwalk in a pink tutu. Go figure.

If you have the time, take this short survey so we can get an idea of what you guys think of this entire ruleset thingy. This ruleset will be implemented by gTeam, starting with the next release. So far, we are the first group outside the LWB circle to sign up for this ruleset, and we highly encourage other teams to adapt it as well.
The "rules" (might want to change the name to suggestions, knee-jerk makes people don't want to adopt them) are fairly simple and a thing of common sense, really. Sign Trinity Translations too.

That style is pretty much what E-Hentai has adopted and used for naming its galleries; what Nash is doing is just some tweaking, specifically for LWB releases above all else. Either way, the system works, and all relevant information is contained in the title. The size of the image is not necessarily important though. I think it's a good standard and keeps things organized.
ReplyDeleteBasically: it doesn't matter what YOU, the scanlation group names it, it'll go into that format on E-Hentai. And since we all upload to E-Hentai, it makes sense to pretty much make it the standard.
Why, yes. The E-H standard certainly was an inspiration, though we see lots of stuff is still uploaded with shit for a name lol.

Well, it's technically not a ruleset, so I should prolly rename it to 'proposition' or something.
I did not really make it with LWB in mind specifically - as of now, implementing that will be quite hard, actually. It was just a scattershot, really. lol.
One thing I'll definitely have to work on is file length - I guess the image size tag is flying right out the window there, rightly so.

ReplyDeleteActually, it does matter. If you upload yourself, you are most likely following either standard anyway.
But most leechers that upload just copypaste your file name and are done with it... Which leads to some not-so-good-looking gallery names. LWB is actually a pet peeve of mine because they put in individual staff members in the tags instead of the group. And some translators don't even put themselves in the tags (or even add an English tag).
I said it doesn't matter, because often the EH users will vote to rename a gallery. They did it on my Dirty Pair one, oddly enough.

ReplyDeleteHad some galleries of mine renamed and of course the voters voted some gibberish up (complete with typos). Gee, thanks lol.
I know that EH is one of THE venues for having the translations displayed and whatnot, but I don't think it should serve as the measure for how we should go about making standards. For all we know, those people that vote to change these names are the very readers that couldn't care less (aka type 5 readers).
ReplyDeleteStill, I'm quite for the standardization, at least from a scanslation-group standpoint. I'm also for standards of individual file naming and even decompression so that our releases (at least those distributed straight from our groups) are uniform and of the best acceptable quality. I leave it to other people to do whatever they want after that.
